Debate 008: Dr. Barnett and Blair debate religiosity

Dr. Barnett Rebuttal #001:

After reading your article on the internet, I have to say that I am so sorry you don’t believe in Jesus Christ, our saviour. You can look all around you and see miraculous signs, everyday. You say you have 2 children, they are a gift from God. Science can not even begin to explain the miracle of a birth of a child. Our bodies are a complete miracle nobody could have created it but God. Look at the birds how they make nests to protect their eggs, and the way other animals survive.

All these things were created by God. You must feel very empty inside because you don’t have God in your life, and you have never experienced his true love for you. I have been a born-again Christian for 5 yrs now, and I can’t begin to tell you the countless miracles God has done in my life. Since I have accepted Jesus in my heart he has given me so much peace. I never have to worry another day in my life, because I know God is taking care of me. He has also poured out his love onto me, and filled a void that was in my heart.

You see Blair every human being has a void in their heart, that is the way God created us, but that void can only be filled by God himself–thru having a personal relationship w/ God, thru Jesus Christ our saviour. I am hear to tell you good news, God loves you so much, more so than your wife or parents have loved you, because he is the perfect Father. And their is nothing God wants more than to have a personal relationship w/ you. He can forgive you of all your sins, all you have to do is repent, ask for forgiveness and he’ll forgive and FORGET.

So Blair I pray this letter touches you, I pray for your conviction and your salvation, and I pray for God’s mercy and grace to be poured onto your life and your families life. I just want you to have the same happiness and peace that I have. God Bless you.

Response to Dr. Barnett #001:

NOTE: Normally I do not respond to proselytizing and witnessing emails. This one was too good to pass up and I decided to run with it.

May I ask what you are a doctor of? I mean no offense, but the fact that you said that science cannot begin to explain the birth of a child leads me to question your credentials. The birth process is one of the most scientifically documented events. From the intricacies of sperm and ovum, conception, the transfer of DNA and genetic material, the designation of sex, the growth process, and the birth itself. A doctor, in any field, should know this.

Also, which article about Jesus did you read. I’ve written several of them and wanted to know which one got you so excited.

I’ll address your points individually:

DR. BARNETT: “You can look all around you and see miraculous signs, everyday.”

What you see as miraculous, I see as natural. The birth of an animal is not a miracle, it is a natural process that has been scientifically explained. The formation of a tornado (which I’ve witnessed first-hand) is not a miracle, it is a natural process. I don’t need a pretend god to explain what I don’t understand. I find it simplistic and ignorant to say, “God did it” for everything that I don’t understand. I prefer to research the issue and find out and understand.

DR. BARNETT: “Our bodies are a complete miracle nobody could have created it but God.”

I agree that a god could have created our bodies. Anything is possible. However, we’re dealing with probability and not possibility. It is also possible that an intelligent race of aliens created our bodies. It is also possible that Mother Earth and Father Sun gave birth to humanity, as the Native Americans believe. Which brings us to another issue. There are over 8,300 known versions of creation. Each one is unique in its own ways, and they range from one extreme to another. So which god is responsible for creation?

We can’t say that the God of the Bible is the creator. He’s a young God in the scheme of things. Before him were countless other gods that created the Earth and life. The oldest known religion, Shamanism, is over 27,000 years old. Their creation account states that God entered the sun and spread the seed of life in a solar storm. God’s wife entered the moon and laid an egg that was fertilized by God’s solar seed of life. The egg became Earth and life spread on the planet afterwards.

Who do I believe? Which religion do I believe? Which God? What if you’re wrong and the Muslims are right? What if you’re wrong and the Hindu are right? Jesus is not the only claim to “the way, the truth, and the light.” That line was actually stolen from religions that existed before Jesus’ time.

If nobody can create a body but God, then what is cloning all about?

What if David Koresh was right and you missed the Second Coming?

DR. BARNETT: “You must feel very empty inside because you don’t have God in your life, and you have never experienced his true love for you.”

Actually, I feel better than I ever have. My life is better now than when I was a Christian (so contrary to your statement, I have “felt it” before). My life is great and is getting better all of the time. I have the love of my family and friends and the joy and comfort of being with my children. Each day I appreciate because I know that I only have one life and one chance. I make the best of each day and accomplish as much as I can.

DR. BARNETT: “Since I have accepted Jesus in my heart he has given me so much peace.”

Yes, religion is a great drug and a wonderful means of escapism. I’m above that need. I don’t need mythology to make me feel better. I have no doubt that you feel better since you started believing in the myth. The religious drug is very addictive and it makes you feel like you are a part of something. The fellowship is addictive and the transfer of responsibility is equally addictive. I’m sorry to hear that you need the use of drugs, but I’m glad you feel better about your life.

I feel sorry for children that die because they will go to Hell under you doctrine. I feel sorry for mentally handicapped persons because they will go to Hell under your doctrine. I feel sorry for feral persons and isolated communities because they will go to Hell under your doctrine. Why, you ask? Because the only way to God is through Jesus. You can only get to Heaven if you accept Christ as your personal savior and recognize his sacrifice on the cross. Children, ferals, isolated persons, and handicapped persons cannot do this. Therefore, when they die, they will go to Hell.

Thanks, but no thanks, you can keep your doctrine.

DR. BARNETT: “I never have to worry another day in my life, because I know God is taking care of me.”

That’s exactly what I’m talking about. The transfer of responsibility. “Worry not for the ‘morrow”, huh? Instead of taking on responsibility, you transfer it to someone else. You pass the buck to a mythological character.

I was watching a special on TV last night. A gunman had entered a building and killed 18 people and injured 13. As they were interviewing the survivors 8 of them praised God for saving them and said something to the effect of, “God was with me.” This phenomenon is also witnessed at any other traumatic event such as plane accidents, fires, earthquakes, and others. Does this mean that God was not watching out after the other 18? How come no one thanks God when someone dies?

When bad things happen we don’t give God the credit. Why does God only get credit for the good? Because if we start attributing bad things to God (which he is responsible for according to scripture) then he begins to lose his luster and his following.

DR. BARNETT: “You see Blair every human being has a void in their heart…”

There are actually four voids in the human heart. We call them chambers. They are separated with valves that allow blood to flow in or out in one direction. There are some species that only have three or two chambers and even some that have only one chamber. While it is technically a void, it is usually filled with blood.

DR. BARNETT: “I am hear to tell you good news…”

I hope you don’t think you’re the first person to do this. I’ve probably read the Bible more than you have. I’ve attended Biblical scholarship studies, taken classes in theology, and studied religion for many years. I’ve also traveled to almost all of the Christian holy sites (from the Old and New Testaments). I’ve visited countries where different religions were the dominant religion; Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Greek Orthodox, Shamanism, and others.

During my studies and travels I’ve discovered something absolutely amazing; Christians know very little about the Bible they embrace and the theology they accept. Do you know the history of the Bible and the history of Christianity? Do you know how the New Testament came about and how close the vote was? Do you know how the KJV was written? Or do you follow blindly because you have tasted the addiction of the religious drug?

DR. BARNETT: “God loves you so much, more so than your wife or parents have loved you, because he is the perfect Father.”

That would explain all the murder, rape, slavery, slaughter, and other mayhem that God condoned in the Bible. That would explain wiping out the Earth with a flood. Nothing better than a father’s love, huh?

DR. BARNETT: “He can forgive you of all your sins, all you have to do is repent, ask for forgiveness and he’ll forgive and FORGET.”

Isn’t that great? I can do anything I want and get away with it, because God will forgive me. Peacemakers like Gandhi, Ingersoll, Paine, Jefferson, Franklin, and others are all burning in hell. Murderers, rapists, and other such ilk are soaking it up in heaven because they asked God for forgiveness. If that is the case, I’d rather go to Hell and be in better company.

This goes back to responsibility. Jesus died for your sins and he takes the burden of your sins so you don’t have to. All responsibility for your actions is removed by his blood and God’s love.

How come he didn’t forgive and forget the world during the flood? How come he didn’t forgive and forget the innocent women and children of Sodom and Gomorrah? How come he didn’t forgive the children that he killed with bears because they teased a bald man? How come he didn’t forgive Adam & Eve? Cain killed his brother and was forgiven. Children teased a bald man and God sent bears to maul them to death.

You can keep that love to yourself.

DR. BARNETT: “I pray for your conviction and your salvation…”

Pray all you want. If I’m powerful enough to alter your life in such a manner, then have at it. I once had entire church congregation (1,300 people strong) pray for me; didn’t work. I had a Christian once tell me that God’s angels would visit me and change my heart; they never showed up. I’ve heard it all before. I’ve experienced the great Christian love in hate mail, death threats, vandalism, and evil stares.

You can keep that love to yourself.

DR. BARNETT: “I just want you to have the same happiness and peace that I have.”

I have your happiness plus more. I’m happier because I give myself credit for things that I accomplish instead of giving a mythological being the credit. I’m happier because I live life to the fullest because I don’t believe in an afterlife, I have to enjoy each day as much as possible. I’m happier because I enjoy nature for what it is. I’m happier because I love my family without having to give credit to God, my family is mine and no one else’s.

I suggest you study on the history of the beliefs you claim to support.

Dr. Barnett Rebuttal #002:

BLAIR: “May I ask what you are a doctor of?”

I am a Doctor of Optometry

BLAIR: “You said that science cannot begin to explain the birth of a child…”

Science wise we know very little, compared to how much we DON’T know (do you realize when I was studying graduate level pathology for about 95% of the diseases out there the etiology is idiopathic–unknown we know so little science wise about what causes diseases)–its true Watson and Crick won a nobel prize for discovering DNA however there are still many theories out there about the replication of DNA a lot is still NOT understood. Yes we know its double stranded and it replicates in a semi-conservative manner and there are purine and pyridmine base pairing, and its the coding system for all our cells in our bodies, but beyond that there are many many holes. You are right about the sperm and ovum however were you aware that in order to have a perfectly healthy child, everything must be in perfect order for instance the pregnant mom must eat nutritiously ie/ the proper protein amount of 100gm/day,and 400mg of folic acid not to mention all the proper proportions of water and fat soluble vitamins through out the pregnancy especially in the first trimester when all the organs and nervous system are forming. Are you aware that any and I mean any infection or inflammation in the mom can cause congenital cataracts, and other organ defects.

Translocations in genes can cause mental retardations, and other life threatening diseases. Do you realize how easy it is for genes to translocate–its as easy as standing in front of a microwave oven w/ a small leak, or UV radiation will cause denaturation of the protein in cells. I’m saying because the body is so delicate there are a VAST variety of complications that can occur however for most of our children out there they do not because God has his hands on the fetus. A child is the most precious gift from God, and because he cares so much about it he takes extra care of it. I’m saying in order to have a healthy child it is a complete miracle.

I have been studying college level science courses for 8 yrs and all my professors admit to this point. This is not something I have made up, it is a known fact in the science community, and professor after professor will drill it in your head it is a miracle to have a healthy child. If you have ever studied embryology, the complexity of the progression/division of the cells, is beyond explanation. We don’t understand it however we know problems and defects can arise very easily. And for how old the earth is it is impossible according to evolutions for our systems to be at the complex level they are. If you have ever cut open and worked on a cadaver you’ll see how intricately complex our bodies are, its full proof only the Lord could have created such a perfect system. An anatomist will not tell you otherwise. In fact that’s all you hear in anatomy class. If you are still fighting w/ this concept I urge you to take a graduate level anatomy and embryology class, and see for yourself. If there is anything I have learned/ had taught to me in the past 8 grueling years of university its this concept.

BLAIR: “What you see as miraculous, I see as natural. The birth of an animal is not a miracle, it is a natural process that has been scientifically explained.”

According to Genesis 1:21 which says So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds and every winged bird according to its kind. And God say that it was good. God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth. Not only did he create the birds infact in Genesis we learn he created every living creature, including man and caused them to multiply. If God created everything including science, how can science explain science. When God creates something we call that a miracle. All of a sudden one day the earth, planets, birds and creation did not arise from nothing, they couldn’t have that defies the laws of nature. And in Genesis we learn how it all began, in fact you’ll it’s all in the first chapter.

I’m sorry you had to experience a tornado, first-hand, but I thank God that nothing happened to you. Obviously God had protected you from the potential disasters of such a phenomenon.

BLAIR: “There are over 8,300 known versions of creation. Each one is unique in its own ways, and they range from the extreme to another. So which god is responsible for creation?”

Since there are many versions to creation they can’t all be right, there can only be one correct truth to the way things happened. So there is one truth and 8,299 false versions. Just like there are many God’s out there (from various religions), there is only one TRUE God. So guess who that is, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure it out. Do you know that Christianity is the only religion that has a savior, no other religion is there a man who died so his people could live eternally. Our Holy Bible is the only bible that predicts what will happen in the future (the Book of Revelations), no other bible does that. They can’t possible know what’s going to happen in the future because they aren’t God. Only God knows what’s the earths fate. The Holy Bible is also the only bible which states events that we have seen come to pass. For instance it talks about all the problems that will transpire in the middle east, and how Israel will not see peace for hundreds of years (God’s wrath), and one more instance is where it talks about homosexuals having a sign that will state their sexual preference, it says that sign is a colorful rainbow. This we have seen come to pass, that is their sign, which first became popular in the late 80’s and 90’s.

BLAIR: “We can’t say that the God of the Bible is the creator. He’s a young God in the scheme of things. Which religion do I believe? Which God?”

In Revelation 1:8 God says “I am the Alpha and the Omega, who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty. In other words he is the beginning and the end. He was around before anyone any living thing. He created all.(Genesis). I understand your frustration about religions because there are so many false doctrines out there, and the Lord warns us of false prophets, and doctrines, and how we are to tell they are not right, is by following what’s right in your heart. Your instincts will tell you something does not feel right.

The difference between Religion and Christianity, it that religion was created by man, and the bible warns us its futile to be “religious”, its like you’re going through rituals but don’t know why. Christianity is all about faith and the Lord. That’s what its all about the Lord. Not a bunch of religious rules and practices. Its all about loving God in your heart, not about saying a x number of Hail Mary’s. I was born Greek-Orthodox, that is a religion, its a cult (by definition, something taken from the bible but twisted so its half true, half false), and in that religion you can’t eat meat on Friday or sew on Sunday or make love on Christmas of Easter.

Nowhere in the Bible does it say this, but they believe in doing all these practices and more (you should hear some of them–very superstitious), and they are caught up in these ritualistic practices, that they forget about what does God say, what does he want. I had been going to the Greek Church my whole life, then my husband (a born-again Christian) asked me to go to his, and in that one service I learned more about God and the Bible than my whole life going to the Greek Church. And the Christian faith made so much sense, it was so logical. It felt right–like I was hearing the truth. You know why because it is the truth.

BLAIR: “Jesus is not the only claim to “the way, the truth, and the light.”

Well if you don’t believe it now you will, because the bible says every knee shall bow and every tongue will confess Jesus is Lord of Lords and King of Kings, even the devil himself has to bow down, so will Buddha, Mohammed, and so on. We will see who is right.

BLAIR: “If nobody can create a body but God, then what is cloning all about?”

Just recently God has let us figure out cloning in animals, however its still in the experimental stages especially w/ humans. No one can make a human like God cause we don’t know everything about our bodies. It is so complex. Its like trying to make fat free chips taste just like the regular kind. It will never happen.

BLAIR: “What if David Koresh was right and you missed the Second Coming?”

The bible says no one knows when the second coming is but God himself, and believe me you will know when he arrives. It will be a great time of tribulation. Famine, disease, natural disasters, the Lord will take his people, and the ones who don’t believe have to endure the great tribulation.

BLAIR: “Actually, I feel better than I ever have. My life is better now than when I was a Christian (so contrary to your statement, I have “felt it” before).”

I never realized you were born-again, then have you been filled w/ the Holy Spirit. Now that is peace, there’s nothing like joy from the Holy Spirit. It will make your spirit leap. I have my doubts about you being a Christian because the bible says once you’re a child you will always be his child, never doubting your creator. Obviously, you were never really his to begin with, as you say you were.

The reason why I feel better about my life is because I know I’m forgiven for my sins, which Jesus died on the cross for, and like the bible says I’m not bound in the chains of sin, that wear me down. He has released those, so I’m set free. There’s no better feeling. Trust me I have accomplished a lot in my life and am still in my 20’s, and this is the greatest gift or joy, one could ever have.

BLAIR: “I feel sorry for children that die because they will go to Hell under you doctrine. I feel sorry for mentally handicapped persons because they will goto Hell under your doctrine. Because the only way to God is through Jesus. You can only get to Heaven if you accept Christ as your personal savior and recognize his sacrifice on the cross. Children, ferals, isolated persons, and handicapped persons cannot do this. Therefore, when they die, they will go to Hell.”

Don’t feel sorry because the bible says all children belong to God, when they die before they grow up they go to Heaven. The devil steals them away from God when they get older and causes them to sin, and when they start sinning is when they need to repent. As for the mentally retarded, once again if they are children they will go to heaven, however if they are older they too will go to heaven, because the bible says he doesn’t put you accountable for what you don’t know. If they are not intelligent enough to understand what Jesus did for them, God can’t make them responsible.

Remember God is a very fair God.

BLAIR: “I was watching a special on TV last night. A gunman had entered a building and killed 18 people and injured 13. As they were interviewing the survivors 8 of them praised God for saving them and said something to the effect of,”God was with me.” This phenomenon is also witnessed at any other traumatic event such as plane accidents, fires, earthquakes, and others. Does this mean that God was not watching out after the other 18? How come no one thanks God when someone dies?”

The Bible says these events will occur but God will save his people, as for those who have false Gods, pray to icons, or simply don’t believe, he says this in Jeremiah 2:26 Where are your gods that you have made for yourselves? Let them arise, if they save you in the time of trouble. Those 8 survivors gave Glory to God for saving them, they did the right thing, He new they were going to give him Glory, its a way or letting the world know, where they need to rest your faith. He’s also letting us know he is ultimately in control, he can do anything. This type of incident also puts the fear of God in people and that’s good, because the bible says blessed are the ones who fear the Lord. In other words blessed are the ones that know He can do anything. The bible also warns us of the second coming of Christ, and we should be ready, because when he arrives its too late to say yes you are Lord and Savior. So he puts the fear in us now so we change and turn to him.

BLAIR: “When bad things happen we don’t give God the credit. Why does God only get credit for the good? Because if we start attributing bad things to God(which he is responsible for according to scripture) then he begins to lose his luster and his following.”

Not really we know he’s capable of anything, but he’s a very patient God according to the bible, and as in the case of Sodom and Gomorrah. The bible says he destroyed those towns why because the people who lived their were so full of perversion, their every thoughts were perverted/evil. They raped, murdered and committed every other sin you could think of. Fathers molesting their children. Men sleeping w/their mom’s. Homosexuality, and every sexual perversion you could think of etc. The Lord was very patient w/them and waited and waited until everyone in the town was perverted except for this one guy named Les and his family, the only good man in that town, so the Lord spoke to him and told him what he was going to do (destroy the town) and he told him to flee to this other town and he would bring him to safety. The Lord kept his promise. Once again the Lord is a very loving, and patient God. He brings his wrath down upon those who refuse to turn away from sin. I mean he gives you so many chances to clean up. He lets it be known he’s not happy w/ the way your living your life, but when you start ignoring him. Look out his wrath comes upon you, and I wouldn’t wish that upon anyone.

BLAIR: “Isn’t that great? I can do anything I want and get away with it, because God will forgive me. Peacemakers like Gandhi, Ingersoll, Paine, Jefferson,Franklin, and others are all burning in hell. Murderers, rapists, and other such ilk are soaking it up in heaven because they asked God for forgiveness. If that is the case, I’d rather go to Hell and be in better company.”

You’re changing what the bible says, he says to repent for your sins, which means to confess them to the Lord and to turn away from them. That means don’t do them again. The murderers or rapists may have confessed their sins but did they turn away from it–did they give their lives to the Lord/were they born-again/ a new creation in Christ?. Then how do you know they are in heaven? Before I got saved I probably broke every commandment in the bible, but after asking for forgiveness, I have turned away from those sins, and don’t do them anymore. I don’t want to because they have hurt me, and they have hurt God. As for Hell trust me you don’t want to spend eternity their. You need to rethink this–eternity is a very very long time. Your life will pass like a msec compared to the time you spend in eternity.

Would you want to be in a place that’s separated from God. Whether you chose to believe it or not God is all around us. Performing miracles you don’t even know of. Like that drunk driver that passed you that could of killed you but didn’t. Or that infectious air-borne microbe that could have caused you to be bed-ridden for months but had no affect on you. Of the Staph infection that could have eaten your flesh when you got a cut. My dear God is all around us protecting us from such things. But in hell you are truly separated from God. There is NO HOPE, NO LOVE, NO JOY, NO HAPPINESS, JUST DARKNESS. Would you want to spend eternity w/ the devil.

The man that wants nothing more than your yourself/your life to be destroyed. The man who wants your marriage to be destroyed , the man who wants your kids to be run over by a car, or to get raped or brutally murdered. The man who wants you to have all the love and happiness sucked out of your life. The man who wants you to be jobless and homeless. Is that who you want to spend the rest of your life with. Think this through very carefully, don’t rush. You have a lot at stake–your life. Do you have any idea of the depression in hell. Do you know what happens in hell. Besides being submersed in burning flames, their will be gnashing of teeth, and so much torturous pain continuously. Yeah I’m sure that’s what you want for yourself your wife and your two kids.

I apologize this note is very long. Take care of yourself Blair. I’m still praying for you, you know that.

Response to Dr. Barnett #002:

DR. BARNETT: “Science wise we know very little, compared to how much we DON’T know…”

So whatever science doesn’t know then you automatically attribute God to it? We base our conclusions on what we do know, not what we don’t know. Throughout history there have been many cases where religion proclaimed that “God did it!” when science could not explain it. When science figured it out, suddenly God found something else to do. Should science give up simply because there are things out there that we do not know yet?

Religion taught us that the Earth was the center of the solar system, the stars were laid down upon a hard surface called the firmament, that arrows shot into the sky would bring the wrath of God, that a global flood occurred, that the Earth was flat, the sun stopped for a day, Pi is 3, bats are birds, and that insects have four legs. Since then we’ve shown that the Sun is the center of the solar system, stars are part of other solar systems, galaxies, and planets, we shoot rockets and space shuttles and no wrath, the global flood never happened, the Earth is elliptical, the sun never stopped for a day, Pi is 3.14 (and some), bats are mammals, and insects have six legs. This is just an example of some of the problems with religion claiming knowledge of events by declaring, “God did it.”

People used to say that lightning and thunder were the work of God. We often heard mothers say, “It is just God moving his furniture around.” Now, we hear mothers explain how lightning occurs and what makes thunder. God no longer “does it” because science caught on.

DR. BARNETT: “…discovering DNA however there are still many theories out there about the replication of DNA a lot is still NOT understood. Yes we know its double stranded and it replicates in a semi-conservative manner and there are purine and pyridmine base pairing, and its the coding system for all our cells in our bodies, but beyond that there are many many holes.”

But why do you attribute this to a miracle? 30 years ago did you attribute the split of the chromosome to the miracle category? 50 years ago did you attribute other things to the miracle category? Why are they miracles until science solves them? For every “miracle” that science solves, religiosity finds a new one. Why? Religious people need miracles to justify their faith. Why do you worship a God of gaps? You believe in the God that fills in the holes of knowledge?

We are not that far from completely cracking the replication issue. There are three categories of replication being looked at, with semi-conservative (as you mentioned) being the “primary suspect”. Obviously, more testing, analysis, and experimentation are required. The three types that are being researched are: conservative, dispersive, and semi-conservative. Watson and Crick’s ideas have played out in the lab, anyway. Replication has been seen and duplicated in the lab. We know that DNA replication is not a passive or spontaneous function.

There are enzymes needed to replicate DNA. We have ascertained a few of them and are fairly positive that we’ve identified most. However, research continues to be sure that we didn’t miss any. The enzymes necessary (from our current knowledge) for DNA replication are topoisomerase, helicase, DNA polymerase, primase (part of an aggregate of primeosome), and ligase. The problem earlier identified between lagging and leading strands has been solved with the identification of Okazaki fragments.

We’re not as far off as you think. It won’t be long until we have the problem solved.

DR. BARNETT: “You are right about the sperm and ovum however were you aware that in order to have a perfectly healthy child, everything must be in perfect order…”

That makes the event more natural and less of a miracle. The Biblical God said, “go forth and bear fruit”, and yet it is very difficult to become pregnant. Even if an egg is fertilized, that still does not mean one becomes impregnated. Eggs get lost in the shuffle. Of course there is the rare occurrence of a Fallopian pregnancy (very scary for the mother).

You’d think that with a marching order of going forth and bearing fruit that it would be easier to get pregnant. Why would God make it so difficult? Of course this goes against the usual anti-abortion stance that Christians tend to take. Considering the number of natural abortions that occur during the early stages of pregnancy. Is it a miracle when a natural (or should I say God-sanctioned) abortion occurs? Or just when a birth occurs? Funny how only good things are “miracles”, huh?

DR. BARNETT: “Do you realize how easy it is for genes to translocate–its as easy as standing in front of a microwave oven w/ a small leak, or UV radiation will cause denaturation of the protein in cells.”

Yes, that is great evidence for evolution, isn’t it? We can actually force mutations in the genetic code. X-rays are good for that during developmental stages. Drosophilae can be forced into “dumpy” wings by exposing the embryo to high heat during that stage of development. This is a mutation that runs contrary to the genetic D/D of “regular” wings. Of course drosophilae is one of many examples where environmental conditions force mutation.

DR. BARNETT: “I’m saying because the body is so delicate there are a VAST variety of complications that can occur however for most of our children out there they do not because God has his hands on the fetus.”

Statistically, that is not an accurate statement. Most eggs go unfertilized and wasted during menstrual cycles. Most fertilized eggs never settle into the uterus to get the proper nourishment, and are aborted during a heavier than usual menstrual cycle. According to the series The Human Sexes, less than 24% of all viable fertilized eggs actually make it to the initial stages of development within the uterus. Even then the numbers are not in their favor, as the body aborts many naturally during the first few weeks.

If you want to call beating these odds a miracle, then that is okay. To attribute this to God is a stretch. If God were truly involved, the odds would not be so low.

DR. BARNETT: “I’m saying in order to have a healthy child it is a complete miracle. I have been studying college level science courses for 8 yrs and all my professors admit to this point.”

I’m sure they do, but probably not in the way you intend it to be. Calling something a miracle through the natural world is fine. Crediting said miracle with a supernatural intervention is silly, especially considering that these “miracles” are so far and few between considering the odds. When a say that it is a miracle that we’re here today, that does not mean I’m referring to a God. Even professors can fall victim to the human need for a quickie explanation for things that we do not know. Don’t know how it happens? That’s okay; just call it a miracle or say, “God did it.”

DR. BARNETT: “And for how old the earth is it is impossible according to evolutions for our systems to be at the complex level they are.”

So you’re one of those “irreducibly complex” people, huh?

DR. BARNETT: “If you have ever cut open and worked on a cadaver you’ll see how intricately complex our bodies are, its full proof only the Lord could have created such a perfect system.”

Our bodies are perfect? I would have never guessed! My back hurts because my skeletal support system is not designed well for bipedal locomotion, I have an appendix that is leftover from when my ancestors had two stomachs, my eyes lack perfect vision, among a slew of other problems. If a creator designed our bodies then he was really sloppy or really stupid.

DR. BARNETT: “An anatomist will not tell you otherwise. In fact that’s all you hear in anatomy class.”

There is a phenomenon with physicians (all types) of believing in God and seeing the body as a “miracle” and “irreducibly complex”. Why? Because physicians learn about and concern themselves with the final product and not about how the final product happened.

DR. BARNETT: “If God created everything including science, how can science explain science.”

Your first mistake is that you assume God exists and you assume that God created science. Your argument fails miserably and has no bearing whatsoever on the discussion.

DR. BARNETT: “When God creates something we call that a miracle.”

How convenient. What do you call it when he destroys something?

DR. BARNETT: “All of a sudden one day the earth, planets, birds and creation did not arise from nothing, they couldn’t have that defies the laws of nature.”

Who said that the universe arose from nothing? Oh yeah, the Christians did when they said God created the Earth from nothing (chaos).

DR. BARNETT: “And in Genesis we learn how it all began, in fact you’ll it’s all in the first chapter.”

Which account? Just so you know I’ve probably read the Bible more than you have. Did you know there are two creation accounts in Genesis? Biblical scholars have identified two authors in the book of Genesis and attribute the mixing to a later editor. So which creation account is correct? Re-read Genesis and see if you can identify the two creation stories. I’ll give you a clue: they contradict each other.

DR. BARNETT: “I’m sorry you had to experience a tornado, first-hand, but I thank God that nothing happened to you. Obviously God had protected you from the potential disasters of such a phenomenon.”

Why are you sorry I experienced a tornado? It was a beautiful example of natural processes. I was absolutely enthralled and enjoyed every minute of it. The tornado did no damage and crosswinds destroyed it before it could touch the ground. However, I lived in Nebraska and Ohio for a spell and experienced many tornadoes. I have also been in earthquakes in California and Turkey. I was in Catania, Sicily when Mt. Etna erupted. None of these events scared me. I was witnessing the natural world unfold and reshape itself and it was wonderful.

Why should God need to protect me from something that you claim he created? Did God create the tornado or not? If he created it then he is responsible for the death and destruction that it brings. Yet he is also glorified for saving a few people who happened to have physics on their side (and location).

DR. BARNETT: “Since there are many versions to creation they can’t all be right, there can only be one correct truth to the way things happened.”

Yes, and how arrogant of you to assume yours is the correct one. You forgot an option though, that all of them are incorrect. What if you’re wrong? Even the Christians can’t agree on which creation account is correct.

DR. BARNETT: “…there is only one TRUE God. So guess who that is, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure it out.”

You’re right; it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to believe in a God. Most rocket scientists have intellectual integrity and honesty.

DR. BARNETT: “Do you know that Christianity is the only religion that has a savior, no other religion is there a man who died so his people could live eternally.”

LOL! You’re kidding, right? I guess this answers my question about whether or not you have actually studied your own religion or others. There are 35 known saviors that died for their people so they could live eternally. There are 35 known saviors that were God incarnate, men born from God and a human mother (most of them virgin births). Guess what? Almost all of them were before the supposed Jesus The Christ. Here is a list of the 35 saviors:

  1. Chrishna of Hindustan.
  2. Buddha Sakia of India.
  3. Salivahana of Bermuda.
  4. Zulis, or Zhule, also Osiris and Orus, of Egypt.

  10. Bali of Afghanistan.
  11. Jao of Nepal.
  12. Wittoba of the Bilingonese.
  13. Thammuz of Syria.
  14. Atys of Phrygia.
  15. Xamolxis of Thrace.
  16. Zoar of the Bonzes.
  17. Adad of Assyria.
  18. Deva Tat, and Sammonocadam of Siam.
  19. Alcides of Thebes.
  20. Mikado of the Sintoos.

  32. Adonis, son of the virgin Io of Greece.
  33. Ixion and Quirinus of Rome.
  34. Prometheus of Caucasus.
  35. Mohamud, or Mahomet, of Arabia.

NOTE: The below account of Virishna originally came from the book The Book The Church Doesn’t Want You To Read, by Tim Leedom. Since the publication of the book, the article contained in the book with Virishna’s information has become suspect. I no longer consider the account of Virishna to be accurate information and any reader of this debate should not as well. I have been informed that the re-issue of the book does not contain the suspect article, but I have not been able to confirm that independently. It should also be noted that I removed the book from my recommended reading list.

I would suggest that readers look into the pre-Christian mythology of Horus, Mithras, and Dionysis to name three. The parallels, while not as “exact” as the suspect Virishna, are very intriguing indeed.

Wait, there’s more. Have you ever done a side-by-side comparison of Jesus to Virishna? Sacred records of Virishna go back as far as 1200 BCE from the East. According to these sacred records (which are 1200 years older than Jesus), Virishna was:

  • …immaculately conceived and born of a spotless virgin, “who had never known man.”
  • …conceived by a spirit ghost (you know… a “Holy Ghost”).
  • …threatened in early infancy with death by the ruling tyrant, Cansa (remember Herod?).
  • …taken by his parents as they fled to Gokul for safety from Cansa (remember Herod?).
  • …saved from an order of Cansa that all male children under the age of two were to be slain. Coincidentally, Herod of Judea supposedly gave the same order 1200 years later. Hmm…
  • …visited by angels and shepherds at his birthplace.
  • …born after a prophecy predicted his birth.
  • …given frankincense and myrrh by visiting sages at his birth. Boy, the coincidences are really starting to add up here.
  • …worshiped and saluted as the “Savior of Men.”
  • …said to have performed many astounding miracles, such as healing the sick, restoring sight to the blind, casting out devils, and raising the dead to life.
  • …put to death on a cross between two thieves.
  • …taken into hell, rose from the dead, and ascended up to heaven “in the sight of all men.”

Still think Jesus was the only one to claim such a thing?

DR. BARNETT: “Our Holy Bible is the only bible that predicts what will happen in the future (the Book of Revelations), no other bible does that.”

LOL! You’re killing me over here! I guess you’ve never read the Qur’an, Verdi, or the text of Ra, Mithra, and a multitude of others. Apocalyptic texts are not unique to the Bible. But yours is the only one that is right, huh?

Didn’t Jesus tell his disciples that their generation would not pass before they saw the Kingdom of God (Second Coming)? The book of Revelation is supposed to be about the Second Coming. Guess what? Jesus missed his cue and the Revelation of John never happened. Why? It is symbolic and has no literal meaning. It never happened and never will. It is not a prophecy; it is a parable.

DR. BARNETT: “The Holy Bible is also the only bible which states events that we have seen come to pass.”

Yes, we can find anything to match any “prophecy” and claim it has come to pass. The problem with Biblical prophecy is that none of them meet the criterion for prophecy. Anyone can say that an earthquake will strike California next year and claim their prophecy came to pass when one happens. Give me a Biblical prophecy that is specific and meets the five requirements for prophecy and then we’ll talk. I’ll give you a clue: most of the supposed prophecies do not even qualify for one of the five criterion and none qualify for two of the five.

DR. BARNETT: “For instance it talks about all the problems that will transpire in the middle east, and how Israel will not see peace for hundreds of years (God’s wrath)…”

Really? It talked specifically about the Israeli-Arab war? The six-day war? It mentioned all of these things specifically? Perhaps what you meant to say is that the Bible says the area of Palestine will be filled with turmoil (as it always has been). Anyone can make a prophecy about an area being in turmoil when it already is. I can make a prophecy right now: The Balkans will be in turmoil for hundreds of years. Of course anyone can also go back and pick-and-choose which “prophecies” they want to match a current event. Just look at Nostradamus for a good example of that process.

DR. BARNETT: “…and one more instance is where it talks about homosexuals having a sign that will state their sexual preference, it says that sign is a colorful rainbow.”

Okay, I’ll take the bait, where in the Bible does it say that homosexuals will use a rainbow?

DR. BARNETT: “He was around before anyone any living thing. He created all.(Genesis).”

Funny thing is that every other text about every other god says the same thing. I guess there are a lot of gods, huh? Speaking of a lot of gods, do you know what Elohim means? It means Gods (plural, as in more than one). That is why there are references in Genesis about God that use pronouns like “us”, “we”, and “they” when referring to the creators. The Jewish Mystics worshiped many gods (Elohim). Shouldn’t you therefore say, “They created all”?

DR. BARNETT: “Your instincts will tell you something does not feel right.”

Yes, and everyone thought Jesus was a false prophet as well. He was the equivalent of David Koresh in his time. The early church had to steal traditions, holidays, and mythology from other religions in order to sell people on the false prophet. One a few followed Jesus initially (just like David Koresh). If you had been alive at the time you would have considered Jesus to be a blasphemer, traitor to Judaism, and a false prophet.

DR. BARNETT: “The difference between Religion and Christianity, it that religion was created by man, and the bible warns us its futile to be “religious”, its like you’re going through rituals but don’t know why.”

Christianity is a religion. If it is so “futile to be religious”, then why are you so religious? Does this mean you do not go to church, read the Bible, or worship icons (the crucifix)?

DR. BARNETT: “Christianity is all about faith…”

That is the first correct thing you’ve said so far. Christianity is all about faith. Faith is belief in something when there is no evidence to support it or evidence that contradicts it. Christianity is a dying religion that is bound for the halls of mythology to stand among the ranks with Zeus, Ra, Mithra, Thor, and Jupiter.

DR. BARNETT: “Not a bunch of religious rules and practices.”

So you don’t follow the Ten Commandments? You don’t read the Bible? You don’t pray every day? Guess what… those are religious rules and practices.

DR. BARNETT: “I was born Greek-Orthodox, that is a religion, its a cult…”

It would probably behoove you to look up the definition of a cult and see how much it applies to Christianity.

DR. BARNETT: “Well if you don’t believe it now you will, because the bible says every knee shall bow and every tongue will confess Jesus is Lord of Lords and King of Kings, even the devil himself has to bow down, so will Buddha, Mohammed, and so on. We will see who is right.”

I believe! I believe! I have been saved! Thank you for showing me the light by telling my I will bow at my knee and confess Jesus as Lord! NOT! I hate to be sarcastic and mocking, but whom are you kidding? You think that simple words can change the mythology to truth? I urge you to research your religion and learn a thing or two about the belief you profess. A book I recommend for beginners like yourself is Remedial Christianity: What Every Believer Should Know About the Faith, but Probably Doesn’t by Dr. Paul Alana Laughlin, a Christian theologian and professor at Otterbein. You can find it at Amazon.Com.

DR. BARNETT: “Just recently God has let us figure out cloning in animals, however its still in the experimental stages especially w/ humans.”

God let us figure it out, huh? Human achievement gone to waste by giving an imaginary being in emperors clothes the credit. What a shame…

DR. BARNETT: “No one can make a human like God cause we don’t know everything about our bodies.”

You forgot to add the word “yet” to the end or your statement. We’re so close we can taste it. You act as if the anatomical structure is that much different from a cow or sheep to a human. Lungs, liver, brain, heart, and others all serve the same function. Humans are no more complex than a buffalo. The issue is not complexity; the issue is the amount of genetic material and genetic mutations thereof.

DR. BARNETT: “The bible says no one knows when the second coming is but God himself, and believe me you will know when he arrives. It will be a great time of tribulation. Famine, disease, natural disasters, the Lord will take his people, and the ones who don’t believe have to endure the great tribulation.”

Again there is that problem of Jesus’ failed prophecy to return before the disciples died. Jesus missed it and so did you. Of course it is just like your “kind and loving” God to come back and bring famine, disease, and natural disasters. Yep, that is the kind of love I want.

DR. BARNETT: I never realized you were born-again, then have you been filled w/ the Holy Spirit. Now that is peace, there’s nothing like joy from the Holy Spirit. It will make your spirit leap.”

Yes, I’m a born-again atheist. I was a Christian that believed in Jesus and God and all that crap. I finally came to my senses and realized what a buffoon I was for falling for that. As a 12-year-old I found myself saying, “I can’t believe adults actually think this stuff really happened!” Since then my education and knowledge have expanded. I’ve searched many religions and looked for a god that was “right.” In all my travels and studies I have only confirmed my atheism. The God of the Bible does not exist. That is provable through the very box that the Bible places he/she/it in.

DR. BARNETT: “I have my doubts about you being a Christian because the bible says once you’re a child you will always be his child, never doubting your creator.”

Really, so that thing about the unforgivable sin that is in the Bible, is that false? Which one is right? Once again the Bible contradicts itself.

DR. BARNETT: “Obviously, you were never really his to begin with, as you say you were.”

That’s because he doesn’t exist.

DR. BARNETT: “The reason why I feel better about my life is because I know I’m forgiven for my sins, which Jesus died on the cross for, and like the bible says I’m not bound in the chains of sin, that wear me down.”

Isn’t that great? It’s so convenient! You don’t have any responsibility for your transgressions because Jesus took them for you. That is a very immoral act, by the way. Sacrificing the innocent so the guilty may live and be removed of their “sin”. That was an immoral thing to do. Would you kill an innocent person to protect the guilty?

DR. BARNETT: “Trust me I have accomplished a lot in my life and am still in my 20’s, and this is the greatest gift or joy, one could ever have.”

I don’t trust you because you’re a Christian. No offense, that just comes from years of experience with the lot of you. Last week a bunch of Christians bashed my car, slashed my tires, and put a cross in my yard. Why? I’m not “one of them”. Thanks, but no thanks. My joy comes from sources other than my imagination and brainwashing.

DR. BARNETT: “Don’t feel sorry because the bible says all children belong to God, when they die before they grow up they go to Heaven.”

Please provide the scripture that says that children that die before they accept Jesus Christ go to Heaven. You’re making up scripture and theology to avoid the issue. The Bible clearly states that the only way to Heaven is through Jesus Christ and accepting him as Lord and Savior and acknowledging his death on the cross. Children cannot do this. Feral and mentally handicapped individuals cannot do this. Therefore, by said doctrine, these people go to Hell. People that do well all their lives like Gandhi, for example, will burn in Hell. Death row inmates will go to Heaven because they accepted Jesus before the switch was pulled.

DR. BARNETT: “The devil steals them away from God when they get older and causes them to sin, and when they start sinning is when they need to repent.”

You’re either confused about your own theology, making this up as you go, or lying for Jesus. Which one is it? There are no scriptures to support your claims that children go to Heaven without accepting Jesus Christ. ALL Christian theologians accept this and have been apologizing for it for a long time (hence, apologetics).

DR. BARNETT: “If they are not intelligent enough to understand what Jesus did for them, God can’t make them responsible. Remember God is a very fair God.”

Fair? He supposedly killed the entire planet of human beings. I guess that was fair, huh?

DR. BARNETT: “The Bible says these events will occur but God will save his people, as for those who have false Gods, pray to icons, or simply don’t believe, he says this in Jeremiah 2:26.”

So no one on board TWA flight 800 was a Christian? Every passenger on that plane worshiped false Gods, prayed to icons, or didn’t believe? Every victim of every natural disaster was not in good with God? What was that about God being fair?

The part of Oklahoma City that was ripped apart by a tornado (resulting in over 30 deaths (1999)) was an area full of Christians. There was one survivor in one of the neighborhoods that went one and one about how God saved him. Guess God didn’t give a crapola about the others, huh? Guess they weren’t “True Christians”.

DR. BARNETT: “The bible also warns us of the second coming of Christ, and we should be ready, because when he arrives its too late to say yes you are Lord and Savior. So he puts the fear in us now so we change and turn to him.”

No offense Joanna, but you have some serious studying to do about your own faith, theology, and chosen religious beliefs.

DR. BARNETT: “…but he’s a very patient God according to the bible, and as in the case of Sodom and Gomorrah. The bible says he destroyed those towns why because the people who lived their were so full of perversion, their every thoughts were perverted/evil. They raped, murdered and committed every other sin you could think of. Fathers molesting their children. Men sleeping w/ their mom’s. Homosexuality, and every sexual perversion you could think of etc.”

And whom did God save from these cities? Go saved a man named Lot that offered his virgin daughters to an angry mob in order to sedate their sexual appetites for the visiting angels. God protected a man that would sacrifice his daughters for sexual pleasure. Then his daughters turn around and participate in incest with their father. God should have seen that one coming since he is all knowing, right? If he knew that Lot would fall victim of incest and that even Lot’s family was “evil and perverted”, then why let them go?

I guess all the children and babies that were living in Sodom and Gomorrah were evil and perverted, too, huh?

DR. BARNETT: “The Lord was very patient w/ them and waited and waited until everyone in the town was perverted except for this one guy named Les and his family…”

Now I know you are seriously lacking in knowledge of your own profession of faith. Have you even read the Bible? Les? Who the hell is Les? God was not patient and God did not wait until everyone was perverted. God was challenged and convinced to wait. God made a bet that so many people in the town would not be good. God only waited so he could win the bet. This is not a caring or loving God, and he certainly is not fair. He is a vindictive asshole according to the Bible.

How can you claim to be a Christian when you do not even know the religion you profess to believe in? You don’t even know the simple story of Lot! At least you got the “L” right in the name! Sheesh!

DR. BARNETT: “…the only good man in that town, so the Lord spoke to him and told him what he was going to do (destroy the town) and he told him to flee to this other town and he would bring him to safety.”

You better go back and re-read the story of Lot. The Lord did not speak to Lot. Angels visited Lot to deliver the news. Men in the village saw the angels and were sexually attracted to them. They banged on Lot’s door begging Lot to release the beautiful men so they could molest them. Instead, Lot offers his virgin daughters in place of the angels. The angels then ferry Lot and his family out of town and tell them not to look back. Lot’s wife does and becomes a pillar of salt (a punishment found nowhere else in the Bible). Later, Lot’s daughters, thinking that all of humanity has been destroyed, consummate with their father after getting him drunk. Apparently, Lot was not grieving over his wife and felt it was okay to have a party and get drunk.

Oh, the morality of this story is oozing, isn’t it? Is this something you would want your children to read?

DR. BARNETT: “You’re changing what the bible says, he says to repent for your sins, which means to confess them to the Lord and to turn away from them. That means don’t do them again. The murderers or rapists may have confessed their sins but did they turn away from it–did they give their lives to the Lord/were they born-again/ a new creation in Christ?.”

I’m not changing what the Bible says. The Bible clearly states that the way to Heaven is to accept Jesus as your savior and acknowledge his death on the cross as your salvation. Jesus is “the way, the truth, and the light”. Remember that part?

If a death row inmate renounces his sins and asks forgiveness and accepts Christ as his personal savior, then that inmate goes to Heaven. Good and honest men that were not Christians are rotting in Hell. I’d rather go to Hell and chat with Gandhi, Ingersoll, Jefferson, Paine, and others than spend an eternity in Heaven with rapists, murderers, thieves, and other criminals.

DR. BARNETT: “Would you want to be in a place that’s separated from God.”

Would I want to be separated from the God of the Bible? Yep. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere near the vindictive, revengeful, hateful, spiteful, evil, and murderous God of your Bible. If proof came forward tomorrow that showed that God and Satan existed, I would choose Satan. At least Satan gave mankind knowledge. God lied to mankind by saying they would die if they ate of the Tree of Knowledge. Did Adam & Eve die? Nope. “And they became like us.” (Notice the word “us” there)

DR. BARNETT: “Whether you chose to believe it or not God is all around us.”

One does not choose their beliefs. Can you choose to believe in a pink unicorn?

DR. BARNETT: “The man who wants your marriage to be destroyed, the man who wants your kids to be run over by a car, or to get raped or brutally murdered.”

I find your reference to marriage rather funny since the lowest divorce rate in the country is among atheists/agnostics (21%) and the highest divorce rate is among Baptists (29%). Regarding the other stuff, God himself causes these things. Your Satan may want it to happen, but God allows it and makes it happen. You claim that God prevents the microbe from entering my lungs, but at the same time, he causes the microbe to enter my lungs. God is the evil one. God is Satan incarnate.

DR. BARNETT: “I apologize this note is very long. Take care of yourself Blair. I’m still praying for you, you know that.”

It wasn’t that long, just full of hypocrisy, fallacies, and errors. I was hoping that since you were a doctor you would have more to offer. Instead, I get aged arguments that have been refuted, a lack of knowledge about the religion you profess to believe in, and senseless witnessing.

No offense Joanna, but you’re an amateur.

NOTE: Dr. Barnett contacted me out of the blue with a few questions & statements, so I figured I’d throw it on our debate so everyone can see how things have “progressed.”

Dr. Barnett Rebuttal #003:

It’s been a few years. Are you still an atheist? How’s your life? How’s your wife and kids. Life’s full of b.s. isn’t it. I’m doing great!! Life is so awesome since I accepted Christ as my saviour. He’s blessed so many areas of my life, my marriage, my practise, my home, my finances, my health. My cousin was just diagnosed w/ cancer, and Jesus healed him. Dr’s diagnosed it w/ a medical miracle. I was diagnosed w/ a thyroid tumor, biopsy results WNL. God is so amazing isn’t he? I am thrilled he is in my life. Dude it would stink to be you. I feel sorry for you. You really need God’s grace in your life. Is your heart growing harder and harder each passing year. I hate to tell you, but you’re on the road to destruction. It’s not too late you can ask God in your life and he will save you, like he saved me from misery.

Response to Dr. Barnett #003:

DR. BARNETT: “Are you still an atheist?”

Yes.

DR. BARNETT: “How’s your life?”

My life is absolutely wonderful. Things are going superb for me and I’m working hard at getting things done.

DR. BARNETT: “How’s your wife and kids.”

Wonderful. My kids are doing fantastic. They are honor roll students at school, they are tolerant of other beliefs (something they do better than many adults) and they are loving life every day. Being kids they have their moments, of course, but overall they are wonderful kids. I really have no grounds to complain when it comes to my kids – I love them very dearly and look forward to being their Daddy for the rest of my life.

DR. BARNETT: “Life’s full of b.s. isn’t it.”

Life isn’t – people are. Life is wonderful; it’s the people that screw it up for themselves and everybody else.

DR. BARNETT: “I’m doing great!! Life is so awesome since I accepted Christ as my saviour. He’s blessed so many areas of my life, my marriage, my practise, my home, my finances, my health.”

You didn’t do any of the work? Jesus did all that for you? No wonder life is great – you sit lazily on the couch while Jesus does all your work.

DR. BARNETT: “My cousin was just diagnosed w/ cancer, and Jesus healed him. Dr’s diagnosed it w/ a medical miracle. I was diagnosed w/ a thyroid tumor, biopsy results WNL.”

The doctors didn’t treat him at all? He recovered all on his own without any medical assistance? I’m sure the hospital documented this fully and put out a press release about the miracle healing that happened with no medical treatment. Can you point me to some of the press releases from that incident? I’m sure such a miracle healing without medical intervention caused a lot of stir in the press.

DR. BARNETT: “Dude it would stink to be you.”

I take a shower every day, so I think that is an unfair criticism, especially since you’ve never stuck your nose in my armpits or crotch. However, if you are willing to do so, I will be more than happy to provide tangible proof (that you can feel, taste, smell, etc – you know – real proof) that I don’t stink.

DR. BARNETT: “I feel sorry for you.”

Suit yourself. I feel wonderful for me. I don’t need an invisible man in the sky to make me feel good about myself.

DR. BARNETT: “You really need God’s grace in your life.”

I’ll be more than happy to accept it as soon as you prove that he exists. You can start by inviting him over for coffee. We can have a sit-down and chat about this so-called intelligent design; I have a few gripes about the blueprints. Can you arrange that? Will he come and talk to me one-on-one over a cup of coffee? Can I shake his hand and give him a hug? Or do I have to pretend and listen to voices in my head?

DR. BARNETT: “Is your heart growing harder and harder each passing year.”

No. There is only one hard heart in this email and that is the one that is saying things negative about me. There is only one person in this email that is spouting off hateful things and making negative comments. I wonder who that is… hmm….

DR. BARNETT: “I hate to tell you, but you’re on the road to destruction.”

Actually, I’m on the road to construction. They’re widening the road around my house and building a new service station. Now I won’t have to drive as far to fill up my tank.

DR. BARNETT: “It’s not too late you can ask God in your life and he will save you, like he saved me from misery.”

No offense, but it sounds like you are still miserable. Loosen up a bit and have some fun.

When you and your husband make love do you think about how God is watching? Does it freak you out knowing that your invisible master is watching your every move and “knows what you’ve been doing, knows if you’ve been bad or good… so be good for goodness’ sake… oh, you better watch out… you better not pout…” Oh, sorry… wrong imaginary friend.

I’ll stop talking down to you if you stop talking up to me.
